Final Project of the Year

For this project, I created a series of designs for a band named ‘Life Underwater’. We had to create in Photoshop an Album Cover, a Poster, and a T-Shirt from scratch. I wanted to do something simple, but colorful. I wanted to create something the photos I took through the semester, so I incorporated pictures I took of different trees, which helped me a lot to keep the same idea throughout the three designs.

Favorite Project of the Semester

After reviewing the projects we did during the semester, I realized that working with photography and Photoshop was my favorite part. As far as my favorite project made by my classmates, I really liked watching the videos made in Final Cut. My favorite ones were the interviews because at this point in the semester, we were used to working with Final Cut and the whole editing process. My all-time favorite was Laura’s and Nic’s mockumentary [Bollywood Gone Awry]. It was funny, well-edited, and engaging.

For this project, we had to do an interview, and Laura and Nic decided to take it an different direction than your normal interview. They went ‘behind-the-scenes’ of an interview with a Bollywood star. I think the entire story was very well constructed: they had a good script, good and relevant b-roll shots, different people talking about their experience with this star, and a good story flow. Not only was the story really good, but the camera work was extremely good and the editing was seamless.

I think doing this interview in a non-traditional way really worked for Laura and Nic. They found a way to keep the audience engaged and laughing and interested in their video. I also think they did a very good job with the audio, which I think was the hardest part of doing this project. When you listen to the video, the audio is not too low or high; everything matched perfectly with the images in the video.

My favorite clip was the first one, when Sharad hits Nic, while his ‘assistant’ is talking on the phone. I think it captures the essence of the video. Also, I know Nic and Laura said in class that they talked with their actors and explained what they had to do, and they just improvised based upon the instructions given – and this clip, that I know was improvised, actually looks planned. As directors and producers, I think they did a great job communicating as a team, with their actors, and especially with the audience.

Overall, I think Laura and Nic did a great interview. They got us laughing about a Bollywood actor, and they kept us engaged in their story for the entire video. I think it’s very hard to make somebody watch an interview for a really long time, so I feel they did a great job of keeping me interested in their video.

Taylor Martin Interview

With Julia, I interview Taylor Martin, the Sophomore Class President. I really liked interviewing him because he’s such an upbeat and outgoing person. It was easy to ask him questions and he would just answer back naturally and give long answers. He definitely didn’t feel awkward in front of the camera and the interview was like an everyday, normal conversation. Through this project, I also realized how much I prefer doing the camera work and the Photoshop work, and not Final Cut Pro.

Silent Movie: National Treasure

I really like doing this video, especially shooting it. I think I have more patience to handle the camera than to actually sit down and edit a video. Directing the actors was pretty fun. It’s really hard because they voluntarily take out time to help you, so you don’t want to be too harsh, but at the same time the friends we worked with were really cooperative and fun to work with.

Music Video in Final Cut Pro

I had a lot of fun doing this project. Shooting and editing was really fun, especially working with a partner. By working in partners, I realized how much better two heads think than one. My favorite filter in Final Cut is the earthquake – it added a lot of emotion in the two clips we used it in. I also found very useful messing around with the motion speed and making certain clips slow-mo or fast-paced.

Filming Experience

I went filming today with Julia for our music video. It was a pretty fun day, trying to film by ourselves for the first time. We met and decided which song we wanted to do and how we wanted to create our video. We chose a pretty upbeat and kind of techno song. For the video, we decided to shoot a club rugby game because we felt it was something pretty upbeat and went really good with the song. We got to practice a lot of the filming techniques we learned on Friday in class. I think the toughest part was not being able to use the zoom tool; it got us really frustrated at first, but we got over it and managed to capture a lot of footage.

Final Cut Pro Video: Challenges

The main challenge I had using Final Cut while creating my video was the sound. I wasn’t sure how to insert the audio to the video, and choosing it so it would fit the video I was creating. Also, finding the 5 clips to use while maintaining the same main characters and story line was pretty hard. It took me a long time to do the video, but I like the end result.

This was by far my favorite project. It has been the toughest one, but the most rewarding one of all. I’ve seen webpages of past students, and I see that almost none of them keep their websites updated. As a future plan, I want to update my webpage as much as I can, because I think it is great resource to display my work and present it to prospective internship places.
